WHAT IS A “MATERIAL DISCRIMINATION” X-RAY?
The Flatscan15 XS and Flatscan30 XS can provide images in both high and low energy measurements. These dual-energy images add a color code in comparison with the grey single energy images that will make it easier for the operator to interpret the x-ray image and detect potential threats instantly.
HOW DOES IT WORK ?
In combination with a CP Battery x-ray generator, the Flatscan XS will do an “Average Effective Atomic Number” (commonly called Zeff number) measurement of the inspected materials.
The Sherlock Security software will interpret these measurements and discriminate the component into 2 categories:
1. Anything with an atomic number from 0-10 is considered “organic” and will be colored in orange
2. Anything with an atomic number from 10-18 is considered “inorganic” and will be colored in green
This type of imaging is often called “Dual Energy”.
ADVANTAGES OF DUAL ENERGY IMAGES?
One of the most important items that need to be located in a suspicious package/bag by bomb technicians is the explosive main charge. As the most common explosives on the market today have a Zeff from 0-10 and thus turning orange, the material discrimination feature will make finding organic materials much easier as they show up very clearly in the image. Using material discrimination x-ray images provide much more information about suspicious items than black & white images. This potentially lowers the time on target and formulates more accurate render for safe procedures.
